Not only are queer and bipoc producers still underrepresented in the (industrial) techno scene, they are also less likely to have access to expensive and time-consuming private music schools due to structural discrimination.

The aim of the mentoring program is to not only create the fundament of a more diverse scene but also to offer free and easy access to knowledge about electronic music production for music producers affected by (structural) intersectional discrimination, so that they can deepen their production skills and learn new techniques in a non-hierarchical and non-judgemental space where participants can explore and express their identity and distinct creativity.

The program CONSISTS OF two courses THAT CENTER TECHNO AND ITS DARK, Atmospheric, experimental AND NOISY SUBGENRES

You can either apply for only one of the programs or for both of them.

  • MARCH - APRIL 2024, BERLIN

    LEVEL: intermediate - advanced

The Ableton Course contains a series of workshops that focus on Sound Synthesis, Sound Design, Recording, Sampling & Processing, Playing live, Demo Preparation, Composition - and aims to show different techniques, non-conform workflows and creative approaches to electronic music production with Ableton Live.

The aim of the course is for each participant to produce a track, which they will then mix and master themselves using analog equipment in a professional studio.

Participants will have access to a private telegram group to connect with each other, ask for feedback and share resources.

Most of the workshops will be recorded so that they can be repeated afterwards.

Each participant has 2 hours of free one-2-one coaching with a mentor and topic of their choice.

  • MAY - JUNE 2024, BERLIN

The aim is for participants to get a clearer idea of what their first modular synthesizer could look like, to find the right modules and workflow that appeals to them, to deepen their theoretical knowledge and to enable them to play live.

Participants will have access to a private telegram group to connect with each other, ask for feedback and share resources.

Most of the workshops will be recorded so that they can be repeated afterwards.

In a creative space with charming room acoustics you will set up mics in various positions and explore their spatial recording qualities. What happens to a natural auditive space when you try to record it? What kind of spaces can be reproduced or even created through recording? And how do spatial recordings play back in a musical mix?

    • How does spatial hearing work?

  • One of the most challenging parts of being an artist, is to talk about oneself and present one’s work. This workshop aims to prepare the participants mentally and practically to pitch themselves and their demo material to label owners in a professional and personal way.

  • Subverting Creativity and Desire is a lecture and workshop encouraging the participants to challenge their default mindsets and workflows in their creative processes. The workshop is interdependent, where group conversations and mirroring of each other’s experiences aim to liberate the individual participants where they feel their greatest challenges lay.

  • In Mixing and Analog Mastering, we’ll spend time in the Analogcut Mastering studio, exploring mixing and mastering from a professional standard and point of view. The participants will have the chance to have a track mastered in the analog realm, and lay hands on the analog chain themselves.

  • Not only are queer and BIPOC producers still underrepresented in the (industrial) techno scene, but due to structural discrimination, it’s also more likely that they don’t have access to expensive and time-consuming private music schools.

The long-term goal is a sustainable structural change, diversification and subversion of the white cis male dominated techno scene. Before FINTA+/ LGBTIQA+/ BIPOC can become more visible in line-ups, a qualitative technical foundation and (education) in music production is needed. This also includes networking & (knowledge) exchange of marginalised music producers, their empowerment as well as mutual support and learning. Queer, trans, non-binary and BIPOC should feel addressed specifically, as these people still have very little visibility in the electronic music scene and therefore need to be supported and empowered the most.

Discovering and nurturing new talent is at the very essence of SUBVERTED. We already feature a lot of trans, queer and non-binary producers, but it’s still lacking of BIPOC industrial techno producers. With this program, we want to start a change.

  • You can, but you don’t have to!
